How to Care for Your Mount: Maintenance Tips That Last a Lifetime

A well-crafted taxidermy mount is a trophy, a memory, and a work of art. It tells the story of a successful hunt and honors the animal in a way few other things can. But like any valued item, a taxidermy mount needs proper care to preserve its beauty and integrity over time.

At Collett’s Wildlife Artistry, we build our mounts to last — but the way you maintain them once they leave our studio can make all the difference. With a few simple steps, you can keep your trophy looking just as sharp and lifelike as the day it was mounted.

Keep It Clean: Dusting Without Damage

Dust may seem harmless, but over time it can dull the color and texture of your mount. Regular dusting is essential — but it must be done gently.

We recommend using a soft-bristle paintbrush or a feather duster to lightly remove dust from the mount’s surface. Always brush in the direction of the hair growth to avoid matting or lifting the fur. For tight areas like ears, eyes, or nostrils, use a clean, dry artist’s brush or even compressed air in short, controlled bursts.

Never use household cleaners, wipes, or sprays. These can damage both the fur and the finish, and may leave behind a chemical residue.

Avoid Sunlight and Heat

One of the most common causes of fading and deterioration in taxidermy mounts is exposure to sunlight. UV rays can bleach fur, dry out skin, and cause cracking or discoloration.

Place your mount in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight. If possible, avoid displaying it near windows or glass doors, especially in hot climates. Even artificial light, if too strong or close, can have similar effects over time.

Likewise, keep your mount away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, or air vents. Excessive heat and fluctuating temperatures can cause the hide to shrink, crack, or loosen over time.

Control Humidity

Taxidermy thrives in a controlled environment. Humidity levels that are too high can attract mold, mildew, and insects — while overly dry air can cause the mount to become brittle and crack.

Aim for a humidity level between 40% and 60%. In damp climates, a dehumidifier can help. In dry conditions, especially in winter, a humidifier may be needed to prevent excessive drying. Keep the room well-ventilated and check for signs of condensation or moisture buildup, particularly if your mount is in a trophy room or man cave.

Watch for Insects

Insects are a hidden threat that can wreak havoc on a mount if left unchecked. Dermestid beetles and moths, in particular, are known to feed on skin, hair, and fur.

Inspect your mount regularly — look behind ears, under jaws, and along seams for small holes, droppings, or signs of powdery residue. If you see any evidence of insects, isolate the mount and contact a professional taxidermist or pest control expert immediately.

Some hunters also use cedar blocks or insect-repellent sachets in the room as a preventative measure, though these should never be placed directly on the mount.

Handle with Care

It might seem obvious, but avoid unnecessary handling of your mount. Oils from your skin can damage fur and fade coloration over time. If you do need to move the mount, always lift it by its wooden base or back panel — never by the ears, antlers, or neck.

If you’re transporting the mount for relocation or during renovations, wrap it in a soft, breathable cloth (never plastic) and cushion it securely to prevent shifting or impact.

Periodic Touch-Ups and Professional Cleaning

Even with excellent care, your mount may need professional attention over time. At Collett’s Wildlife Artistry, we offer touch-up services, including:

  • Paint restoration around eyes, nose, and lips

  • Fur or feather realignment

  • Repair of minor cracks or loose stitching

  • Insect treatment and prevention

We also recommend a professional cleaning every 5–10 years, especially for older mounts or those kept in high-traffic areas. This ensures the mount stays vibrant, secure, and protected for years to come.

The Value of Preservation

A taxidermy mount is more than decoration — it’s a personal story captured in form. By investing just a little time and care into maintenance, you protect that memory and ensure it can be passed down to the next generation.

At Collett’s Wildlife Artistry, we’re here not just to create beautiful mounts, but to help you preserve them for life. Whether you have questions, need a restoration, or want guidance on setting up your trophy room, we’re just a message away.

Take pride in your trophy — and take care of it. Your mount will thank you.
