Zebras in wild

Taxidermy is both an art and a science. For many hunters, understanding what happens after the hunt deepens their appreciation for the final mount. At Collett’s Wildlife Artistry, every mount tells a story — a blend of technical skill, anatomical precision, and artistic flair. The Taxidermy Process Explained.

Here’s a step-by-step look at how we transform your trophy from raw cape to lifelike masterpiece.

1. Arrival & Inspection

Once your trophy arrives, we begin with a full inspection. We check for any damage, hair slippage, or spoilage. Every detail is documented, and we confirm your preferences — including the pose, facial expression, and mount style.

2. Skinning & Fleshing

If the cape wasn’t fully prepped in the field, we carefully handle the skinning process. Fleshing follows — a thorough removal of meat, fat, and membrane from the hide to prevent decay and ensure proper tanning.

3. Tanning the Cape

Next, the cape is salted, pickled, and tanned. We use a professional tanning process that preserves the hide, enhances durability, and maintains natural texture and color — vital for a long-lasting mount.

4. Form Preparation & Alteration

We select a form that fits the animal’s species and pose. Often, forms are altered to match the exact measurements of the trophy. Sculpting and adjustments reflect natural musculature, movement, and personality.

5. Mounting

Now, the artistry begins. We stretch the tanned hide over the form and make fine adjustments to achieve realistic tension and flow. Clay is used to sculpt facial features and subtle details.

6. Drying & Finishing

After mounting, the piece is left to dry for several weeks. Once dry, we move to the finishing phase: painting around the eyes, nose, and mouth, adding final textures, and refining any detail lost during drying.

7. Final Presentation

Your trophy is then mounted on your choice of base — from wall pedestal to custom full-body display. Every mount is created to preserve not only the animal but also the memory of the hunt.
